Overview

ColabSphere is a live collaboration platform built for developers who want to go beyond solo side projects. Creators list projects with the skills they need; contributors discover work that matches their stack and join teams that are actually shipping.

The product centers on skill-based matching and in-project communication. Once you join a project, real-time chat (WebSockets) keeps discussion inside the workspace so coordination does not scatter across DMs and random group chats.

It is deployed on Google Cloud Platform and is available in production at colabsphere.com — a real product with real users, not a demo sandbox.

Key features

  • Create and publish collaborative project listings
  • Discover projects filtered by matching skill sets
  • Join teams and contribute with role-aware membership
  • Real-time in-project chat powered by WebSockets
  • Production deployment on Google Cloud Platform
  • Portfolio-friendly project visibility for builders

Real-world usage

Where this kind of system shows up outside a portfolio context.

  • Students and early-career engineers forming teams for hackathons or portfolio builds
  • Open-source maintainers recruiting contributors with specific skills
  • Indie founders staffing side projects without hiring full-time
  • Campus clubs and communities coordinating multi-person software efforts

Challenges

  • Matching users to projects without noisy, low-quality recommendations
  • Keeping chat reliable under concurrent project rooms
  • Shipping a multi-service stack (Node + FastAPI + React) as a cohesive product

What I learned

  • Skill graphs and clear project metadata matter more than raw social features
  • Realtime UX needs careful room scoping and connection lifecycle handling
  • Co-building a live product forces end-to-end ownership beyond tutorials
